Darin remembers Lucy

Many of you know that Lucy, the cat that lived here at Skylight Books for most of our 11 years of business, passed away on November 13. She had recently been diagnosed with Feline Lymphoma and it has been a sad, strange, and moving experience for all of us as we hear from all her friends and fans who miss her as much as we do.
I think this letter from our former card buyer, zine buyer, and special orders person, Darin Klein, paints a vivid, simple, and accurate portrait of Lucy as well as expresses what many of us feel. Thanks Darin.

LUCY

I think of all those she ignored or demanded attention from,
All those who had nicknames, treats and love for her,
All those passing by outside who debated whether she was real or fake
as she lounged in the display windows,
All those who felt so drawn to her,
And all those whose lives she touched.
I will miss her jumping up on my shoulder,
and I will celebrate all the special times we shared.

I am SO sad to hear this news!

I moved to LA five years ago.

Prior to moving here I would visit the bookstore and my most poignant memory was the big orange cat .

I came here from Portland , land of bookstores .

Coming to Skylight and the presence of Lucy made the change seem so much more palatable.

Often times ,I would come to the store with no intent to buy anything , but just to feel the warm of the place which was most often offered up by Lucy .

If I was lucky , I would attain her attention by scratching the right spot , though usually she was impartial to attention.

It makes me so sad to think of her gone ,and coming to the store will never be the same!

I can only send my heart out to all of you who have been her most personal friends and who have looked after her.

May you all be smothered with love and gratitude and comfort.

I know how difficult it must be .

And Bless Lucy !

One of the most outstanding members of the community!

May you be graced with eternal love,Kitty Diggins

Oooooooooo, Darin. I love that part about Lucy jumping on your shoulder!!! I'm glad I got to witness a few of those triumphant moments. Triumphant for who? I don't know...both of you?
