Here is another moving letter responding to the news of our store cat's, Lucy's, illness. All this love really makes us feel important and cherished and I am positive that Lucy feels it too. It is amazing how much impact a little bookstore and one cute orange cat can have. Thanks for all your kindness.
Dear Kerry,
Thanks for informing Lucy's fans about her condition. I'm so sorry to hear she is ill. I wanted to share a few thoughts about Lucy if you have time to read them. Thank you.
I moved to LA two years ago from San Luis Obispo, CA. Before I moved, I came to visit a friend in Los Feliz, to determine whether L.A. was right for me. As I explored Los Feliz, I got to know Skylight and Lucy very well. Skylight felt tranquil and inviting and the book selection was outstanding (I live in Burbank now, but still drive out to buy books from you). I remember walking around the shop and discovering Lucy doing her usual meet-and-greet. I scratched her head for awhile and thought, "This place is great".
I remember bringing my girlfriend, Oshy, to L.A. before we moved and I took her straight to Skylight. I told her, "You've got to meet this cat. She's the best". When we got to the store, we sat on the circular benches and waited. Sure enough, Lucy jumped up, greeted us and sat down. Oshy fell in love with Lucy instantly. We were hooked.
Eventually, we moved to Los Feliz. Oshy and I took numerous evening walks to acquaint ourselves with our new neighborhood. Usually, at the beginning of the walk, one of us would ask the other, "You want to go see Lucy?" It's great to think of how many times we stopped in to see her. She became a highlight of our walks and of our immersion in L.A.
You and Lucy have created a wonderful community that surrounds Skylight Books. Your author signings, selection, service, and of course, Lucy have made Skylight my only choice to shop for new books. Oshy and I thought you should know how much Lucy means to us. She's a wonderful creature who has impacted us significantly. We consider her a good friend. We hope she can be comfortable during her treatment and we wish you and Lucy the best.
Take Care,
Colin Westerfield
